Sam Mitschke

About Me:

Sam is a playwright and theatre historian, specialising in British and American Holocaust theatre. She holds a PhD in Drama & Theatre Studies (2015) from the University of Birmingham (UK). Her recent work includes a critical analysis of Jessica Durlacher and Leon de Winter’s adaptation of Anne Frank’s diary, Anne (2014), for a forthcoming anthology, Contemporary Approaches to Adaptation (Palgrave Macmillan); and an article about site-specific performance at Auschwitz-Birkenau for Holocaust Studies: A Journal of Culture and History. Sam recently completed an AHRC Cultural Engagement Fellowship at the University of Leicester, specialising in the work of British playwright Joe Orton. Her current research engages with the effects of empathy in British and American Holocaust theatre, the notion of the ‘Holocaust musical’, the use of ‘Holocaust cabaret’, and theatre in Holocaust museums.
